Your Camden Osteopath: Q&A with Karina Spero

We recently welcomed some new team members here at Guy Gold's, and it's about time we introduced them. Today we're chatting to Senior Osteopath Karina Spero. Welcome to the team Karina!

How long have you worked at Guy Golds & Associates?

I am quite new to the clinic having joined at the end of June 2024. So this is a new adventure for me!

What made you decide to practice Osteopathy?

I was looking for a professional training and a profession in which I could grow and develop over a lifetime. I have always had an interest in health, physiology and the mind -body relationship and love to work with people. I studied Sciences and Biology at ‘A’ level and Psychology at university. When I had a pain in my upper shoulder, I had an osteopathy session and experienced great relief after just one session! Although I did not know much about osteopathy at the time, I realised there was something in it. A family friend had also trained as an osteopath and was loving her work. So it was this special mix that encouraged me to find out more and embark on the training to be an osteopath. After 23 years I haven’t looked back.

Do you have any specific areas of interest when it comes to Osteopathy?

As an osteopath I treat adults in the main, which I very much enjoy and am experienced in diagnosing and treating a wide range of musculoskeletal ie joint and muscle problems. I also have specialist training and clinical experience in treating babies, younger and older children and teens. A baby for example, after a long or fast, difficult or c- section delivery, can benefit greatly from hands on osteopathic treatment to resolve birth strains. Young and older children and teens also respond really well to osteopathy, which can work on many levels… both physically during or after illness, injury or growing, and emotionally. It is also hugely beneficial for neurodiverse children and those with developmental delay. Another area of interest is pregnancy and post-partum care which is an equally important area of treatment and care.

What do you like best about working in Camden?

I love coming out of Camden Town station and experiencing the buzz and bustle of the High Street! Come rain or shine the vibrancy is there. Then turning left into Jamestown Road and within minutes feeling how the atmosphere calms and quietens, before reaching the clinic. Despite being just a stone’s throw away, the practice is peaceful and feels far from the madding crowd!

What is something you'd like people to know about Osteopathy that might not be commonly understood?

Osteopathic treatment can also improve immunity and health. When we work on the body, joints and muscles with osteopathic manual therapy this improves blood flow and lymphatic ‘exchange’. In turn, lymphatic system function improves and this is an important part of the immune system. Osteopathy can also help calm the autonomic (sympathetic) nervous system, which helps to reduce pain and the body’s perception of pain.

What is your favourite thing about working at Guy Golds & Associates so far?

The warm welcome I have received from Guy and the team! Including those behind the scenes. Also, the lovely patients I have had the privilege of treating so far.
